Paulist Father John Hurley was ordained in 1977. His Evangelization ministry leadership began the following year in Portland, OR with the founding of the Paulist Center for Catholic Evangelization. He graduated from Catholic University, the Washington Theological Union and holds a D.Min from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley. He is the former Executive Director of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Secretariat for Evangelization, the National Pastoral Life Center and the Department of Evangelization for the Archdiocese of Baltimore and Vicar for Evangelization for the Diocese of San Jose. He is also a consultant with Sadlier Publishing. In 2014, he launched a new Paulist initiative NewEvangelizationStrategies.org where he serves as a consultant and missionary. In this position he works with dioceses and parishes in making the paradigm shift from maintenance to mission for the New Evangelization. Since 2016, now Cardinal McElroy called him to coordinate a synod in response to Amoris Laetitia on Embracing the Joy of Loveand again in 2019 a synod in response to Christus Vivit with Young Adults. He is a consultant to the San Diego Diocesan Synod Commission and is now coordinating 16 pilot parishes in Re-Imagining Parish Life and Leadership in a Synodal Church. He is based at historic Old Saint Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco where he once served as pastor.
