LAS VEGAS (October 10, 2024)– Archbishop George Leo Thomas, Ph.D. is pleased to announce his appointment of Steve Schmitt as the Director of Development for the Archdiocese of Las Vegas. As Director of Development, Schmitt will direct all major fundraising programs, and assist in establishing new fundraising opportunities which will support the various ministries and programs in the Archdiocese.
“We are delighted to have Steve Schmitt join our leadership team,” said Archbishop Thomas. “This is a pivotal moment for our Archdiocese. With his deep commitment to our faith, his innovative vision for development, I know we can grow our ministries, extend our outreach, and deepen our impact. His leadership comes at a critical time as we are growing fast as a new Archdiocese with multiple construction projects, and an increase of men studying to be Priests.”
Steve’s career has been deeply rooted in commitment to the mission of the Catholic Church and service to the Las Vegas Community. His great-grandfather, Ed VonTobel Sr. came to the original Las Vegas land auction in 1905 and established a family business that supported the community for nearly 80 years. The VonTobel family has a long history of supporting the growth of the Roman Catholic Church in Las Vegas since its inception.
Steve attended St. Anne Catholic School, graduated from Bishop Gorman, and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from UNLV. He has received a Master’s degree in Church Management from Villanova University, as well as Certificates in Nonprofit Management from the University of San Diego, Lay Ecclesial Ministry, and Liturgical Studies.
“As a native Las Vegan, with three generations of history in the valley, my family's legacy of faith in Las Vegas inspires me to help our Archdiocese meet the needs of our ever-expanding community,” said Schmitt. “I am passionate about expanding the Church's reach in addressing the sacramental and ministerial needs of our Family of Faith and the Las Vegas community at large.”
