Read MoreDec. 11, 2023 (Mesquite, NV) — La Virgen de Guadalupe in Mesquite, Nevada gathered on December 10, 2023, to celebrate the second Sunday of Advent and the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The highlight of the weekend was the 10 a.m. Mass was celebrated by Archbishop George Leo Thomas, Ph.D., and concelebrated by Fr. Joji Vincent, the Parochial Administrator which brought an extra level of solemnity and celebration.
Before Mass, a Rosary and a small procession was held with a statue and image of Our Lady of Guadalupe processed into the Church, led by Matachines. Matachines are dancers who, adorned in distinctive costumes and accompanied by unique instruments, perform their dances at pilgrimage sites.
During his homily, Archbishop Thomas shared about the sacred symbols of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the rich symbols that are present on the tilma, which has been a strong symbol of faith for almost 500 years, and the different ways Mary has appeared in different cultures.
In addition to the Mass, there was also a parish festival with different treats available for purchase.
