LAS VEGAS (Feb. 22, 2023) - The Rite of Election marks a significant milestone in the journey of those seeking to become Catholic. It is a formal recognition by the Church that the candidates have completed their period of preparation and are ready to receive the sacraments of initiation - Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist. The Rite of Election is an ancient ritual that has been practiced by the Catholic Church for centuries and has evolved over time to reflect the changing needs and circumstances of the Church.
On February 19, 2023, Bishop George Leo Thomas, Ph.D. presided over the Rite of Election at the Cathedral of the Guardian Angels in Las Vegas. The liturgy was attended by over 500 people, including catechumens (those who have never been baptized).
The Rite of Election is a powerful and emotional experience for those who participate. It is a reminder that our spiritual journey is not a solitary one but a communal one. We are not alone in our pursuit of faith and holiness, but we are part of a larger community of believers. The Rite of Election is a celebration of this community and a recognition of the important role that each of us plays in the life of the Church.
During the ceremony, each candidate is called by name and presented to the bishop, who then confirms their readiness to receive the sacraments. The candidates are then asked to sign the Book of the Elect, which is a record of their commitment to the Catholic faith. This book is then signed by the bishop, and the candidates are officially declared members of the Elect.
After the Rite of Election, the candidates enter a period of intense preparation, designed to deepen their understanding of the Catholic faith and to prepare them spiritually for the sacraments of initiation, which are typically received at the Easter Vigil.
