January 18, 2024 (Las Vegas) — On January 18, the Archdiocese of Las Vegas held its first Pallium Lecture with the topic of "The Vital Legacy of Vatican II" presented by George Weigel as the first lecturer.
George Weigel, a leading Catholic intellectual, is perhaps best known for his widely translated and internationally acclaimed two-volume biography of Pope Saint John Paul II: the New York Times bestseller Witness to Hope (1999) and its sequel, The End and the Beginning (2010). He is the recipient of 19 honorary doctorates in fields that include divinity, philosophy, law, and social science, and has been awarded the Papal Cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice.
During the opening remarks for the lecture, Archbishop Goerge Leo Thomas, Ph.D. shared, "Our friendship dates back 49 years when I was a seminarian and George was a newly minted associate professor of Theology and the acting Academic Dean at St Thomas Seminary in Kenmore, Washington." Archbishop Thomas also shared that his Master's thesis is one of the only to be signed by George Weigel.
